Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the island, the scenery was beautiful, I'm certainly not lyin'.

For our first holiday season in Europe, we decided to take a trip back to our fave island destination - the Canary Islands. When I dream of a white Christmas, I prefer white sand over white snow, after all.

We rented a lovely little apartment from a very friendly couple in Garachico, on the island of Tenerife, with a beautiful view of the ocean. We had been there before and loved swimming in the natural pools framed by lava rocks. There was no swimming this time (alas, a bit storm had caused some damage that was still being cleaned up), but we did have a chance to explore the area further, hike around a bit, and find some animal friends.

We got out and some new sights around the island, as well! We visited Puerto de la Cruz and enjoyed hanging out by the (very cold) pools. The ocean collides against the back wall, sending huge sprays of water up in the air, which makes for a very cool ambience. After some window shopping, we found a restaurant with tasty fish and a breathtaking view.

We also took a day trip to Playa de las Terasitas, featuring imported golden sand and plenty of rentable beach chairs. What a truly relaxing way to celebrate the season! And no visit would be complete without some sangria, which we enjoyed in Santa de la Cruz.

Before heading to the airport, we went back to one of our fave attractions: the Palmetum. This gorgeous collection of palm trees is a great place to take a walk and realize just how many different kinds of palm trees there are. Plus, it's built over an old city dump - that's what I call taking a lemon and making lemonade.

A very Canary Christmas to all and to all a good night!
