Visits from friends are the best! Especially when those friends are Tim and Leanne. They made the journey from Dane County (WI) to Dane country, and we could not wait to show them around!
First stop: our fave outdoor food hall, Reffen. They were jet lagged but good sports, and we all enjoyed a nice meal.
Full day 1 - we obvs had to make the pilgrimage out to the little mermaid statue - all whist singing the classic tune "underscore C". We walked around and saw a few more sights, like Christiania, before hitting up the then-ranked number 1 restaurant in the world - Noma. The food was delicious, but the overall experience of it was what made it so memorable. We started with a bouquet of flowers soup and finished with edible candles - how cool is that?
What better way to spend day two than with the Danish crown jewels? We visited Rosenborg Castle, where we saw plenty of interesting historical delights, the highlight of which being the jewel collection. In the afternoon, we rented some Friendships. It was almost too hot to be out on the water and poor Jacob spent the entire time feeling like he was going to run us into a parked boat. Eventually, we stopped under the shade of the bridge, which was the right idea!
We also wanted to introduce Tim and Leanne to our favorite fairytale island - Ærø. Alas, it being the hottest week of the year, things didn't go quite to plan. Our air BNB did not have AC or any fans (common in Denmark) and was thus a heat box when we got to it. We opened all the windows and went out for drinks and dinner, where we were treated to the Danish classic røde grøde med fløde for dessert. After hanging out by the water while the sun set, the house had sufficiently cooled down for us to be able to get some sleep!
For our grand finale, we went to Tivoli - the second longest running amusement park in the world and inspiration for Walt Disney. We definitely saved the best for last!
